Reading Together® at West Gore School

PARENTS and pupils taking part in Reading Together at West Gore School are turning a new leaf.
West Gore School assistant principal Jenny Stearn said the ... programme had given parents more confidence when reading to their children and helped pupils with their reading skills.
Sometimes parents were too quick to prompt their children, and reading time could create anxiety for parents and pupils, she said.
"It encourages parents to read with their children and for the children to read to their parents. It teaches [parents] ways of making everything a really positive experience," Mrs Stearn said. ...
During workshops, parents discussed how to solve problems such as setting time aside for reading.
Building child-parent relationships was an important part of the programme.
"I think it benefits them both - building positive relationships between the parent and the child as well. The benefit carries over into other areas of the pupil's education," Mrs Stearn said.
Pupils whose parents had done the programme were using the school library a lot more, she said. ...
